Brazilian Supreme Court approves return of social media platform X

The Brazilian Supreme Court has authorized the return of the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, to full operational status in the country. The decision, issued by Justice Alexandre de Moraes, takes effect immediately and resolves a longstanding legal battle between the platform’s owner, Elon Musk, and Brazilian authorities.

The platform had been suspended in late August, after failing to comply with multiple court orders to combat hate speech and appoint a legal representative within Brazil as required by local regulations. The situation escalated when Musk publicly criticized the orders, labeling them an infringement on free speech and accusing Justice Moraes of authoritarian behavior.

The Attorney General’s Office recently weighed in on the matter, stating there was no legal basis to continue blocking the platform. This opinion paved the way for Moraes to lift the suspension, provided X met specific legal obligations. In response, Musk reversed his earlier stance, complied with the court’s demands, appointed a local representative, and paid the outstanding fines.

Brazil represents a significant market for X, both in terms of user base and market potential. The platform’s prolonged suspension had raised concerns over its ability to maintain relevance and trust in the region. With the resolution of the legal dispute, X is now set to resume its activities in one of its most influential markets.
